MTV - Beyond the Wall
Pro-immigration video installation in New York City
You probably remember that during the 2016 presidential elections, a big topic of discussion was that Donald Trump wanted to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico. MTV approached the post production company where I worked at the time, Fluent Visual, to create a response in direct opposition of this. We came up with the idea of building a wall in New York City with projected short videos of famous immigrants in the U.S. telling their heartfelt stories. Probably the biggest stars were Diane Guerrero from Orange Is the New Black and Arturo Castro from Broad City.
I was in charge of the entire post production process. The interview footage was shot on greenscreen to give us flexibility. I hired a freelancer to speed up the process of keying the footage. I edited most of the videos, along with the help of my team, and color and sound mixed all of them. The delivery deadline was tight and I was up until 3am several nights in a row to meet it! It was a hustle and well-worth it.
Once all the videos were delivered and approved, our team went to New York to make sure the installation went off without a hitch. It was a huge success! We spent the day at Bryant Park talking to passersby about the intention of the installation and encouraging them to vote for Hillary. There was also a spot where people could take selfies and easily share it on social media.
